Excerpt taken from Europe 2010: Germany + Neighbors, Italy #3

After nearly 2 hours [on the train from Frankfurt] I stepped out into the greetings of a sign that read Bacharach. I still don’t know how to pronounce it. We dragged our luggage on the bumby roads and made our way to Pension Lettie in this tiny, medival-like town. We conversed with our friendly hostess, Lettie, who charges €85 a night. The pillows are huge!!

We decided on Hotel Resteraunt for lunch, mainly for its unique name. I can’t say I liked the main dishes, especially the sauces and gravies which blankets the meat. They had great applesauce!

Time allowed us to ascend a hill, covered in grape-vines. By now it was sunny, and jet lag wasn’t hitting us too bad as Lillian and I bounded up the steps. We reached a random locked (b/c holiday?) tower and a great view. That means tons of photos which means tons of [photography] critique from dad.

Back at the bottom near the KD Boat stop we waited on a park bench. I was so tired by the time our cruiseship came. We dragged some chairs to the shaded area and my mom instantly dozed off. We passed several castles. Many of these were built in Medival days for collecting toll from ships. Now, everytime we spot one, everyone rushes to one side of the boat with cameras.

At our stop, St. Goar, we walked down the main street and got gelato. We tried mango, hazelnut, and yogurt. All were good. Up the hill we walked. Lillian found plants with squishy buds that squirt water. Sweaty, we reached the ruins of the main castle.

Inside is a maze. Without maps we would’ve gotten lost. We turned corners, took stairs, and went through dark tunnels. Bright flower petals leaned with the breeze.

Napoleon did a good job in tearing down the thick stone walls and tall pillars. Inside a museum bowls and pitchers and codes of arms, along with intricate models, were on display. From this height you could see the Romantic Rhine, German houses, and various hills. By the path there was a well and we got crystal-clear reflections. Soon we’d had enough and took the 10-minute walk down.

A “german specialty” is Spaghetti. I don’t mean Italian Pasta, I mean a bowl of whip cream covered in strings of vanilla ice cream soaked with strawberry sauce, sprinkled with bits of nut. I can still taste it. Worth €4.5 for the claim.

We passed shops selling bags, beverages, and black forest cuckoo clocks. My dad was able to locate the empty train station. A few people joined us in waiting in the hot silence.

3-minutes late, our ride came. Hop on, closest seat, prop up feet, doze, suddenly back at Bacharach. After dropping off bags and buying water from Lettie, us kids and dad got some food at a bar/snack place. Cheap fish in sauce with potatoes, cheesy cream, butter, mustard with pretzels.

Pay less than €15, we went for one last look at the town. The old post office had a horn (instrument) as its symbol. Back on floor 3 of Pension Lettie, I washed up and made use of my giant pillow. Better be refreshed for another big day!

Tip of the Day
